You're not wrong on your take on art. There's a book that's really great called 'Why Do We Like What We Like?' that is about research on such things. In it, there's a thread about a woman who had a painting that she kept on the wall in like a stairwell going down to her cellar she thought was ugly. She eventually finds out that it's a legit Pablo Picasso original. She immediately starts talking about how beautiful and perfect it is, and she moves it into her front room. They asked her if she only liked it because she knows its by Picasso now, and she was offended by the notion and insisted, strenuously, that she loved the painting for real, objective reasons and that it was evident to anyone that it was a near-masterpiece painting. The book is really fantastic. It also talks about why anyone in the media industry who says they're a 'tastemaker' or 'know what the public wants' are just full of shit morons trading myths. No one is a tastemaker. No one knows 'what the public wants.' And they prove it. It's not that hard to see why, but what movies, books, etc succeed or fail is purely and perfectly random. It's a coin flip. And it always will be. There is no way to predict it. There is no way to influence it. For every big-budget blockbuster there is a big-budget giant flop. Because the audience is different every time. You don't get to release to a set group of people you can learn the tastes of. If you perfectly predict one group, the next group will be completely different. The book lays out the statistical analysis that proves that even the CEOs of big publishing houses that people think are 'great' were just random. Most of their big successes were projects greenlit by their predecessors. 9 publishers said 'no' to JK Rowling when she was sending out Harry Potter. And there's nothing special about the one who said 'yes'. They didn't know anything better, they just got lucky. But its hard to build a career and become a bigwig executive by saying 'I think I can be lucky'. So they make up myths and stories about how they're awesome to get ahead. You see the same thing when channels like the Sci-Fi network switch to SyFy and show wrestling. They're not doing that by numbers. They're doing it because some asshole in a suit needs to 'shake things up' to justify his own existence. And whether it works or not is perfectly random. The whole media industry is a coin flipping game.
